How To Become A Fitness Coach

By Mitya Ferguson

The unprecedented upsurge in the number of fitness gyms around the country is a testament to the growing consciousness towards the importance of staying healthy and fit. Naturally, there has been a corresponding increase in the demand for fitness and wellness coaches. These career paths are quite appealing to a lot of people because they can provide a steady income stream from something that they are already accustomed to doing - keeping fit.

Finishing an associate or bachelor's degree is preferred but not required to pursue a career in fitness. Unlike most health related fields, relevant training and some certification are all it takes to become a full-fledged fitness and wellness coach. The International Health and Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) which represents 9,000 fitness and wellness establishments in the United States is urging its members as well as the rest of the industry to provide standards in terms of accreditation to ensure consumer safety.

There are several organizations in the US that provide these trainings and accreditations. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) are just some of them, and these provide several certificate categories. Typically, you need to pay for a training module, complete such and pass an exam prior to getting certified.

The industry does not completely close its doors to coaches who don't have these certifications. Fitness-impassioned individuals can still take the Beachbody coach route. The Beachbody Company creates and sells in-home fitness and weight loss products. The coach business opportunity involves maintaining a personal website where you can interact with people and help them achieve their personal fitness goals. The good thing about being a Beachbody coach is that you can receive weekly commissions when your website visitors buy products from the Beachbody products you promote. Indeed, being a Beachbody coach can be personally and financially rewarding.

Either way, good interpersonal skills are a must to succeed in this career path. Simply put, a fitness coach should be able to provide prompt and constructive feedback to motivate their clients to continue. As a Beachbody coach, you should work with your clients to set realistic fitness goals and inspire them to not only see working out as a temporary fix to unwanted pounds, but more importantly to instill it as a habit.
