Body Composition: Lean Muscle

By Greg White

Lean body mass is the estimation of how much you would weigh, without any blubber. This is the actual weight of your muscles, bones and organs. By figuring out your lean body mass, you can keep a track on how much muscle you are building, or losing.

What's Lean Body Mass (LBM)?

Lean body mass is essentially the exact opposite of body fat; it's the weight of muscles, bones and the organs present in your body. This value is very important for you to know; as most folks begin to lose muscle instead of fat when they start a drastic, crash diet so as to lose those additional pounds, this is the unhealthiest way for you to lose weight.

Why is it Important to Figure out LBM?

It is a fact that muscles weight heavier than fat. Somebody with a lean and muscular body will weigh way more than someone with a high fat percentage, of the same build. Figuring out your lean body mass is much more vital than knowing just your body weight, as it helps keep track on the amount of muscle tissue you are building or losing. When you are on a weight loss plan, you should not be losing muscle and gaining fat, rather you should be making your body more lean and muscular by eliminating body fat. The lean body mass calculator can help you identify if you're achieving your goal.

How Can LBM be Worked out?

The lean body mass calculator takes your weight, height and sex into account. Just enter your weight in pounds and your height along with your gender and you will get the most approximate reading of your lean body mass. One easy method to calculate lean body mass is to calculate your subcutaneous fat % and take away it from your total weight. The fat percentage for a female is usually higher than that of a male; this is why the calculator also requires you to enter your sex together with your height. Lean body mass is actually not your perfect weight, it is just the weight of all the non fat parts of your body.
